Julia Fay Cobern Smith , age 87, passed away on 1-28-2025 in Katy Texas. She was a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all that knew her.
Julia was born on 9-13-1937 in Mercury Texas to Elbert and Vera Cobern. After the death of her mother she lived with her grand parents Charlie and Clara Cobern of San Saba. Later Julia lived in Brady Texas along with her siblings Shirley Cobern Sansing, Corky Cobern, and Ann Cobern. She graduated from Brady High School in 1956.
In 1960 She married Clyde L Smith of Menard, Texas . They had two children , Melinda Lee Smith and Clyde L Smith Jr.
She and Clyde were involved in the community in Menard as part of the Jaycees. Later she enjoyed competing in chili cook offs , having won numerous awards including 1st place in the Chili Super Bowl in Buffalo Gap Texas. Julia donated time and assistance to the Ben Richey Boys Ranch, the March of Dimes, United Way , and various charities in her spare time. After working for Suddenlink Cable for 32 years , she retired to spend more time with her grandchildren and family. She loved the Dallas Cowboys , Willie Nelson , and spending time with her friends and family above all.
More than anything else in the world , Julia enjoyed being a devoted grandmother. She loved spending time with them , offering guidance, support , and encouragement no matter what challenge they faced.
Julia is preceded by her husband Clyde , her daughter Melinda, and her sister Shirley. She is survived by her son Clyde L Smith Jr and his wife Donna of Katy Texas, her brother Corky Cobern and wife Sina of Hurst Texas, and her sister Anne Cobern of Odessa Texas, as well as her grandkids Blake L Smith and Kayla Melinda Smith of Katy Texas.
A private ceremony will be held at later date for family. It was her wish that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
